Evan’s Spark: From Frustration to Innovation
Evan, one of our co-founders, has always loved fishing. But like many anglers, he found himself frustrated by the time-consuming process of setting up rigs. “When I first got into fishing as a hobby, one thing I quickly grew to dislike was setting up rigs, not because it was hard, but because it took up valuable time I could’ve spent actually fishing,” Evan recalls. The excitement of getting out on the water was often dampened by the tedious task of tying knots, dealing with snags, and untangling lines.
The tipping point came during a fly fishing trip in Montana about a year ago. Fly fishing, with its intricate and delicate flies, amplified the challenge of knot-tying. “That experience really got me thinking: there has to be a way to simplify this process,” Evan says. The seed for NoKnot was planted.
Back at Loyola Marymount University (LMU), Evan enrolled in a class called Fundamentals of Entrepreneurship during his sophomore year. Tasked with developing a product or service idea for a startup, he saw an opportunity to solve his fishing pain point. “That’s when I had the idea for a device that lets you set up a fishing rig without tying any knots,” he explains. That initial spark evolved into the NoKnot fishing clip. A simple, innovative solution designed to save time and make fishing more accessible.
Jake’s Journey: From Night Fishing to NoKnot
Jake, our other co-founder, caught the fishing bug a few years ago while joining high school friends for night fishing trips at local harbors, docks, and jetties. “I really enjoyed the peace and detachment that it provided, as well as the fun and satisfaction that I got from reeling in a big fish,” Jake shares. But like Evan, he wasn’t immune to the frustrations of rigging up, especially when knots and tangles slowed down the fun.
When Jake joined Evan’s group in the Fundamentals of Entrepreneurship class, he immediately saw the potential in Evan’s idea. “It was a revolutionary concept that solved a pain point I had experienced firsthand,” Jake says. His enthusiasm and shared vision fueled their collaboration. After months of research and development, the duo created their first prototype. “The vision really started coming together,” Jake recalls. Nearly a year later, that prototype has become the NoKnot fishing clip, a product poised to change the fishing world.
